Chinese Zodiac: Hare

I got assigned the Hare zodiac Symbol, so here's some imageboards, color studies and silhouettes for that..

This is an embarrassing edit but I just have to say: THAT BEE BACKPACK. SO DAMN COOL.

Since the Hare's description sounded really innocent and fun, (Cheerful, popular, quick-witted, changeable, earthy, perceptive, talkative, agile—mentally and physically, magnetic, intelligent, astute, flexible, open-minded. Can be fickle, arrogant, childish, anxious, rude, gullible, stubborn.) I thought a little kid would be a fitting character. And also i like drawing cute things.

Here's some color options I was fond of...

And for the darker, more sinister Hare character: one of the litte girl's imaginary friends, his name is 600.

yup, that's all I have for today c:

3 Styles

okay, so the assignment was to design a character (in my case a Zulu Pitfighter) in three different styles. I chose Fabien Mense because I love his work so hard, Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, specifically) for a challenge, I never do vector stuff and Katamari Damacy for kicks. I had also planned to give an example of my own style but, goddang I really underestimated the time it'd take to work through illustrator. I realize now that I should have done Tartakovsky's style in Flash because I'm more familiar with it, but I was dumb and did illustrator anyway . So unfortunately, my own style isn't represented just yet.
But I digress, here's a little research:

some sketches and body shapes I was thinking about:

And here are my 3 finished styles:

1st is Fabien Mense's style, second is Genndy Tartakovsky and lastly, katamari Damacy. Annnnd I guess here's a little character bio:
This is Nkonkoni, he's 26 and grew up in a zulu village in Sisonke province- along with his older brother Kubu. Though it's been quite a few years, Nkonkoni used to be pretty well know in his village for surviving a attack by a Hyena when he was 12- he fought with the animal and ended up with quite a scar on his torso- he really dislikes talking about this incident.  Nkonkoni is fond of reading and has always dreamed of opening a book store in the nearby city Gauteng.  So when his brother proposes that the two of them move to the city and start working, Nkonkoni's all too willing to come along. At first things are pretty awesome, the two brothers make enough to get by, and Nkonkoni can feel his goal getting just a little bit closer everyday. However, His older brother informs him that he may have made some kinda stupid business deals with some seedy people- and is now in some serious debt to all kinds of scary individuals. Nkonkoni is pretty unimpressed by this, but his brother then proposes a way for him to quickly and easily get out of debt- by entering Nkonkoni in the Underground fighting circuit. Nkonkoni is even more unimpressed by this idea. But after Several hours of begging and arguing, he gives in.
By Nature, nkonkoni's a pretty peaceful guy- and while he did get into a few fights when he was younger, he's not the type of guy that enters a career of pit-fighting willingly. In fact, Nkonkoni would rather try to help his brother in a more peaceful, lawful way- but he agrees that it'd probably be best to get his debts paid off as quickly as possible, and if that means a few black eyes and missing teeth- well... he figures there's not much to be done about it.

self portrait!

A self-portrait! Whoa! My roommates and I decided to do Clue style portraits, I think mine could still use some work though.

Shapes! Dinosaurs!

This was a simple shape exercise-first assignment in class.
